Decorations in Indian Army

I don’t have to remind you about the date of our Independence. Britishers had various Gallantry awards. Viz Victoria Cross, Order of British Empire, Distinguished Service Order, Order of British Empire, Military Cross etc. They were conferred to the Armed Forces Personnel who have demonstrated courage of exemplary order while discharging their duty not only in recognition but also motivating the rest of the Armed Forces. On attaining Independence, India also needed such awards of recognition.

Param-Vir-Chakra

After Independence the country did not have gallantry awards. The need was felt, accordingly the Adjutant Generals Branch of Indian Army was tasked to come up with various awards for gallantry in the face of enemy. Accordingly the awards was conceived according to the precedence are Param-Vir-Chakra, Maha-Vir-Chakra, Vir Chakra, Sena Medal Gallantry and Mentioned-In-Despatches and approved.
